Beginner Oil Painting Tips: How Beginners Can Learn Oil Painting

Oct 20
4 min read

Starting oil painting can feel like stepping into a whole new world. The rich colours, the smooth blending, and the timeless appeal of oils are incredibly inviting. Yet, many hesitate because they think oil painting is messy, smelly, or just too complicated. I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be that way. I use water soluble oils so there's no toxic smells or mess. With the right approach, anyone can learn to paint in oils and enjoy the process from day one.

In this post, I’ll share practical advice, beginner oil painting tips, and insights from my experience teaching oil painting classes. Whether you’re just curious or ready to pick up a brush, this guide will help you get started confidently.

Getting Started with Oil Painting: Beginner Oil Painting Tips

The first step is to gather your materials. You don’t need to buy the most expensive supplies to begin. Here’s a simple list to get you started:

  • Oil paints: Start with a basic set of primary colours such as alizzrin crimson, ultramarine blue and yellow ochre plus white and maybe a booster colour such as lemon yellow.

  • Brushes: A few synthetic or hog bristle brushes in different sizes. Synthetic as best if you're using water soluble oils.

  • Canvas or canvas board: Small sizes are perfect for practice. You can also use oil paper which is great for just trying out.

  • Palette: A wooden, glass or disposable palette for mixing.

  • Palette knife: Useful for mixing paint and creating texture.

  • Rags or paper towels: For wiping brushes and spills.

Once you have your materials, set up a comfortable workspace with good lighting. If you're using regular oils, make sure you have enough ventilation. Oil paints do have a smell, but using odorless solvents and working in a well-ventilated area keeps it manageable.

Tip: Start with simple subjects like still life or landscapes. This helps you focus on technique without getting overwhelmed.

Is Oil Painting Difficult to Learn?

Many people ask me if oil painting is difficult to learn. The honest answer is: it depends on your expectations and approach. Oil painting has a learning curve, but it’s not impossible or overly complicated. In my classes, I make it simple by using a 3 step approach.

Here are some reasons why beginners sometimes find oil painting challenging:

  • Drying time: Oil paint dries slowly, which can be frustrating if you want quick results. However, this slow drying is also a huge advantage because it allows you to blend colours smoothly and make changes. A finished painting will be touch-dry in 3-5 days depending on weather conditions.

  • Materials and safety: If using water soluble oils, you don't need solvents of any kind.

  • Techniques: There are many techniques to explore, and in my classes I teach many of these.

The key is to start simple and build your skills gradually. Focus on learning how to mix colours, control your brush strokes, and understand layering. With practice, you’ll find oil painting becomes more intuitive and enjoyable.

Practical Steps to Improve Your Oil Painting Skills

Once you have your materials and mindset ready, here are some practical steps to help you improve:

  1. Practice colour mixing: Spend time mixing your paints to understand how colours interact. Try creating a colour chart with different blends.

  2. Experiment with brushwork: Use different brushes and strokes to see how they affect texture and detail.

  3. Learn about layering: Oils work best when painted in layers, from thin to thick. This technique helps your painting dry properly and adds depth.

  4. Use reference images: Painting from photos or real life helps you observe light, shadow, and colour.

  5. Keep a sketchbook: Drawing your ideas and compositions before painting can save time and improve your results.

Remember, mistakes are part of learning. Don’t be afraid to paint over areas or start a new canvas. The beauty of oils is that, if you make a mistake or don't like something, you can just wipe it off or cover it up! Each attempt teaches you something new.

Why Taking a Class Can Make a Difference

While self-teaching is possible, joining a class can accelerate your progress. In my one-day 3 Easy Steps to Painting in Oils classes held every January, May, June, and July, I guide beginners through the entire process in a supportive environment. These classes are designed to break down oil painting into manageable steps, so you leave with a finished painting and the confidence to continue.

For those interested in exploring style and technique, my Paint like the Impressionists workshop held in June offers a deeper dive into brushwork and colour inspired by the masters.

Classes provide:

  • Hands-on guidance and immediate feedback

  • Structured lessons tailored for beginners

  • A chance to meet other learners and share inspiration

  • Access to quality materials and tools

If you want to learn the best way to learn oil painting for beginners, attending a class is a fantastic option.
